Youth Work Day

A recent youth conference in Madison chose the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway for a service project. Mark Cupp, LWSRB Executive Director, coordinated the event with assistance from DNR officials and volunteers from Cultural Landscape Legacies (CLL) and Friends of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway (FLOW). Over 100 teenagers and adults from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints worked at the Dingman and Hamilton mound groups in the Town of Eagle, Richland County. Cupp provided background on the Riverway project while Dr. Robert Salzer, CLL President, provided background information on the effigy mound building culture before the workers began their tasks. The group cleaned up an old dump site, piled brush, developed trails, removed down and dead material from the mound groups and worked with Dr. Salzer on some preliminary measurements. Overall, it was a beautiful fall day with an enthusiastic and well-behaved group of volunteers.

Special recognition for their assistance that day goes to Steve Williamson and Brad Hutnik of the Department of Natural Resources; Dr. Salzer, Richard Cupp, Timm Zumm, Mark Sethne, Jim Klippel and Bill Brewer of CLL and FLOW.

Thanks to all for their hard work and generous donation of time and equipment.
